Is it possible to be both high-tech and sporty at the same time? Well, Mercedes-Benz aftermarket car whiz Brabas aims to prove so as it gets into the "iBusiness" side of things

The S600 makes 510 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-12 in factory trim, impressive figures any way you cut it. Brabus, however, decided its iBusiness needed more motivation and gave it the proper treatment. The V-12 gets stroked and bored out to 6.3 liters and larger turbochargers are used to boost engine performance. A stainless-steel exhaust expels gases and the final output is 740 horsepower and 995 pound-feet of torque, although the tuning firm has dialed the torque back to 811 pound-feet to preserve the modified five-speed automatic transmission and get the power to the rear wheels efficiently.

Inside the top-shelf S-Class awaits an Apple-based entertainment and communication system. A mini-sized Mac computer runs the operation, which is accessed through iPads and shows its talents by way of a 15.2-inch widescreen display built into the headliner. The computer itself is housed in between the rear seats and the iPads can be affixed to seatback trays with available keyboard, mice, and Web camera peripherals. The front seat headrests also incorporate monitor screens and the Mercedes COMAND system can be controlled with the iPads. A 64-gigabyte iPod touch stores music for the entire cabin to hear.

No Brabus update is complete without a bodykit, enlarged wheels, bigger brakes, and new acceleration and top speed numbers. The iBusiness runs to 62 mph from a standstill in four seconds flat and to 124 mph in 11.9 seconds. Brabus says the electronically limited maximum speed is 211 mph, which sounds plenty fast for the businessman on an airstrip.

EARLIER THIS YEAR Mercedes-Benz launched the latest additions to its passenger car range: the W212 E-Class sedan and the C207 E-Class Coupe.

Both body styles arrived on our shores with the choice of a 3.5 litre V6 or 5.5 litre V8 petrol engine, while a range of thrifty diesels and a direct-injected petrol four have since been added to the mix. We decided to test the model that sits in the middle of the petrol engined offerings: the E350 sedan. The 2010 E-Class sedan is all-new, and the ninth generation model in the E-Class’s 60-year history...

Mercedes-Benz is hopping on the extended-range EV bandwagon with a compact that combines European styling with a Chevrolet Volt-like drivetrain good for 62 miles of all-electric motoring. Although the car is just a concept, it provides a glimpse of the E-Benz we’ll see next year.

The BlueZero E-Cell Concept is one of three eco-friendlier cars that use a modular design that allows Mercedes to offer a gas-electric, battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain in a compact five-seater...

2010 Mercedes E250 CDI Review and Test Drive

"I won't parrot the company line about the E-class being the heart and soul of the brand, except that it is. The E-class is a "business saloon," the standard-issue Mercedes -- stout, reliable, comfortable and enduring. This is the stainless-steel Rolex of cars, steadily elegant and appropriate for any occasion, and you have to admire the alacrity with which the E-class can go from being a tan airport taxi drone in Berlin to being a valet-park star in Beverly Hills."

That, along with, "to save you the suspense, I'll tell you now: The new E-class is a fantastic car but for one huge, agonizing, inexcusable error that baffles me like a Rubik's Cube the size of the Seagrams Building. More on that in a moment. For now, consider a short list of some of the more fun safety systems available on the E-class as standard or options...." sum up Pulitzer Prize-winning Automotive journalist, Dan Neil's, review of the new Mercedez-Benz E250 Diesel sedan.

Mercedes S400 Hybrid Review by Motor Trend

Six years ago, I attended the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Long Beach, California, and at the conclusion of a riveting presentation by a major advanced-tech battery manufacturer, a questioner asked about the prospects of lithium-ion batteries for automobiles. The presenter was stony-faced for a few seconds -- and then responded with a cocked head. "What do you mean by lithium batteries in cars?" Nickel metal hydride was then considered the cutting-edge in battery tech for hybrids, and this question about lithium-ion -- provoked by its chief advocate, the late Dr. Paul MacCready, who was elsewhere in the hall -- seemed beyond the presenter's grasp. The questioner might as well have asked when worm holes in the fabric of space and time were going to let cars blink from one place to another.

Well, I've just driven the world's first mass-production automobile that employs a lithium-ion battery (the lithium-ion-using Tesla Roadster being a low-production affair). No, it isn't a full electric vehicle as Dr. MacCready would have preferred. But there, tucked in the corner of the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid's engine bay, was a 32-cell, 120 volt, 0.9 amp-hour, lithium-ion battery about the size of shoebox...Continued

Arturo Alonso 300 SL Gullwing starts at $220,440

The people behind the Gullwing-America 300 SL Panamericana, Gullwing GmbH, have decided to recreate the original 300 SL Gullwing. Created by Arturo Alonso, this Gullwing pays homage to the racing version of the 300SL that was produced in 1952.

Instead of the 215-hp V6 sits a 5.5L V8 making 408-hp or a 320-hp 3.5L V6 (which will be offered in 2010 along with a Roadster variant). The engine is available with 7-speed automatic (7G-Tronic) for the V8 Gullwing and 6-speed manual for the V6. Steering-wheel mounted paddle-shifters are available as an option.

BRABUS again wins Best Brand in Auto Motor Und Sport Tuner Division

If BRABUS ever started a football team (as in FOOTBALL–not that sissy soccer stuff) the word “Dynasty” would be floating around town about now.

For the fourth consecutive year, ‘Auto Motor Und Sport’ (’Auto Motor and Sport” for those who don’t know German) has named the makers of matte-black Mercs the world over the 2009 ‘BEST BRAND’ in the ‘Tuners’ category. Readers were asked to select those tuners whose products they felt were particularly convincing, and after all the ballots were tallied, BRABUS had won more than half of the vote–52.9% to be precise.

This, of course, is nothing new for BRABUS CEO Bodo Buschmann, who took the opportunity, after clearing off a new space in his trophy case, to give the media the ol’ humble acceptance speech shtick, saying this award is, “more than just an honor. It is also the ultimate motivation for us at BRABUS to continue to develop high-performance automobiles and tuning components that meet and exceed the high expectations our customers, the media, and the general public place on us.”

2009 Mercedes Benz 300SL Panamericana is the Next Gen Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Arturo Alonso and his company Gullwing America are working on the ‘rebirth’ of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Known as the 2009 300 SL Panamericana, the model is based on a reproduction made by Gullwing AG - who produces the closest model you can get to the real 300 SL.

Power comes from a 5.5L V8 M-133-55 engine that is used on the SLR and other AMG models. The engine will be mated to a speedtronic transmission and has been retuned to produce 370-hp with a maximum torque of 391 lb-ft. In 2010 Gullwing America will also offer a V6 M-272-E35 unit that produces 320-hp and a peak torque of 266 lb-ft.

The 2009 SL Panamericana will be painted silver with blue accents.

New McLaren P11 Supercar Details Straight from the Source: Ron Dennis

The on-track rivalry between the Ferrari and McLaren Formula 1 teams has been one of the most intense and hard fought in the history of grand prix racing. Now McLaren wants to take that battle to the streets. If surprise plans announced by McLaren Group chairman Ron Dennis today come to fruition, within five years McLaren Automotive, the division of the Group that currently builds the Mercedes-McLaren SLR, will be a stand alone company building up to 4000 high-performance sports car a year.

Centerpiece of the plan is an all-new mid-engine McLaren sports car codenamed P11. Dennis gave no detail about the car, but it is a Ferrari F430-sized coupe. The P11's design is the work of talented American Frank Stephenson, whose credits include the new Mini and the new Fiat 500, and stints at Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. It's a handsome, relatively conventional looking coupe that appears to feature advanced aerodynamics, including a flat floor and movable rear wing.

Given F1 division McLaren Racing's long standing engineering expertise -- the team was the first to use structural carbon fiber in a grand prix car, for example -- it's reasonable to assume P11 will feature extensive use of lightweight materials and sophisticated electronic controls. While no details of the engine or transmission have been released, sources close to McLaren say the car will offer significantly higher levels of performance than either the Ferrari F430 or the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Dennis says McLaren Automotive has been working on the P11 for more than two years. More than 20 prototypes have been built and are undergoing testing. The silver-grey coupe shown briefly to assembled media at the high-tech, high-style McLaren Technology Center in Woking, England, will be the show car. Sources say the P11 may make its public debut at this year's LA Auto Show...Continued
