The Nissan Xterra may be marked as one of the first victims of the ongoing recession and the federal government's CAFE rules.

In 2009, automakers sold 211,042 midsize SUVs. By contrast, at the beginning of the decade, they managed to move close to 1.65 million out the door. Nissan is also in the throes of balancing its larger, thirstier SUV portfolio with its small-car offerings, to offset a negative CAFE profile, according to Larry Dominique, Nissan vice president of advanced product and product planning and strategy.

"Xterra’s in a tough segment; the segment’s falling apart," Dominique said. "Xterra’s going to be a tough vehicle to keep around."

He attributed the lagging sales to a market moving away from traditional, body-on-frame SUVs, but confirmed that the Nissan's pickup lineup and its Pathfinder sport-ute are not going anywhere. The Frontier currently holds third place among compact pickups in the United States, behind the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.

2010 Nissan 370Z Convertible Review

This may be Nissan's first graceful convertible. The 350Z convertible looked very much like a hatchet job, executed after the hatchback coupe was designed. The old 300ZX was even worse, with its basket-handle roof bar; the 240SX convertible, from the same era, was another ungainly piece, with its B-pillar stubs.

As much as the 370Z is improved on the outside, it's even better when you're on the inside looking out. The swept-down door panels curb the sitting-in-a-barrel feeling imparted by the old car, and it's great to look out over the sculpted hood. Additionally, Nissan, which only recently cost-cut its way to some of the industry's crappiest interiors (including that of the '04 350Z) has done a handbrake turn, and the new 370Z is a welcome beneficiary. Not only are the door armrest and panels nicely padded, but so are the sides of the console, against which your leg rests. The steering wheel feels great, and Nissan's nav/stereo/trip computer interface is one of the easiest in the business. The seats, which are heated and cooled, have lots of lateral support, but they're also very firm which could feel confining on a long trip...The full review

2009 Nissan 370Z Nismo - Review by Automobile Magazine

If you commanded the Nissan genie to pimp your Z-car, the result would be the second-generation NISMO model now available at dealerships. (The NISMO name stands for Nissan Motorsports International, the prime source of extreme performance parts and special-edition models created by Nissan factory experts for hard core street and track use.) Updates beyond the standard 370Z are 18 extra horsepower, 6 lb-ft more torque, various interior and exterior design touches, a retuned suspension, wider 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels, and Yokohama instead of Bridgestone tires. Even after you add a $780 dealer-installed engine oil cooler, the NISMO package runs only $6980 more than the regular 350Z equipped with a Sport Package.

NECK TORQUING EXTERIOR

The NISMO Z is not for those who prefer slipping through traffic unnoticed. The new nosepiece, which adds about six inches to overall length, includes a prominent chin spoiler and corner canards aimed at improved aerodynamic downforce. Add-on side sill extensions help manage under-car air flow. The new rear appendage is a biplane affair combining a spoiler with a wing. That device in combination with a diffuser panel between the exhaust pipes helps stick the rear tires to the pavement at high speed. Rear-fender slots are purely cosmetic.

The factory claims that there is genuine aero downforce at the felonious velocities this car is capable of achieving. Five color choices are offered-white, silver, black, red, and graphite. After exposure to one red and one silver NISMO Z, we highly recommend the red choice unless your driving record is already under assault.

Nissan Skyline GT-R Lambo Doors by LSD Design

LSD Design released information on their new wing (lambo) doors for the Nissan GT-R. The creatively named LSD Flügeltürbeschläge, which is not actually a good choice for a "safe word" with your dominatrix, is one more step in the quest by aftermarket parts makers to customize every Nissan GT-R that comes off the line.

We kid, of course. "Flügeltürbeschläge" loosely translates from German as a more multisyllabic way of saying "fitted wing door." Details

New Nissan GT-R Nürburgring Lap Record: 7 Minutes, 27.56 Seconds - April 16, 200

Hot off the presses, Nissan is claiming a new Nürburgring Nordschleife record for the GT-R. The new time is 7 minutes 27.56 seconds.

The new time was set almost one year to the day after the previous best time of 7 minutes 29.03 seconds. With Nissan planning another assault in the next 24 hours, there could be more news tomorrow. More Info

Nissan's Press Release

"Nissan GT-R Snares New Nurburgring Record"

The all-conquering Nissan GT-R supercar has set another lap record at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

A Japanese specification GT-R, running on Dunlop tyres with RAYS forged alloy wheels (V-spec equipment) recorded a blistering 7min 27.56 secs yesterday.

Driven by Nissan’s Chief test driver Toshio Suzuki (who recently demonstrated the GT-R to the Australian media in Sydney at Eastern Creek Raceway) piloted the performance coupe.

Although dry, the track surface grip was impaired by dust and sand. Under the direction of Nissan GT-R Chief Vehicle Engineer, Kazutoshi Mizuno, and depending on conditions, the Nissan test team will attempt another record at the ‘Ring tomorrow.
