Reports are coming in that General Motors is giving serious thought in releasing its next-gen Chevrolet Malibu midsized sedan as a four-cylinder only.

Rival automaker Hyundai has made the switch in its 2010 Sonata midsize sedan, a direct competitor to the Malibu, ditching the V-6 option for an all-four-cylinder range. GM recently launched its 2011 Buick Regal exclusively with four-cylinder engines, while a similar move is expected to become commonplace among all GM's midsize offerings before 2016, when new CAFE regulations take effect. Should the change take effect, GM's 2.4-liter direct-injected I-4 will likely fit the bill in the new Malibu.

The trend towards downsized cylinder count is nothing new for the Malibu over time. When the Malibu first roamed the streets back in the 1960s, it was offered with an available V-8; when it reemerged for the Nineties in 1997, a V-6 was the largest powerplant available.

This move doesn't signal the end for six-cylinder engines at GM, as it will likely continue to offer larger engines in its larger vehicles.

The V6-powered Camaro uses a 3.6L engine with variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy. It is SAE-certified at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, SAE-certified at 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque (569 Nm). It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. 2010 Chevy Corvette Manual Transmission Launch Control System - Full Throttle

During the 2010 Corvette seminar at the National Corvette Museum's C5/C6 Bash, Corvette's Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter goes into more detail about the new Launch Control option that will be standard on all manual transmission Corvettes. The system modulates engine torque 100 times per second to give the driver the optimal amount of traction on a full throttle start. The best news? Corvette's Launch Control System will not void your warranty!

To engage the launch control system, the driver puts the traction control into competitive mode and then pushes the gas pedal to the floor. The system will hold a predetermined RPM based on which engine you have (LS3/LS7/LS9). When the driver quickly releases the clutch, the launch control modulates engine torque 100 times per second to get the best traction.

GM's testing of the system found that just about any driver can achieve very consistent times on par with that of a skilled driver's best efforts.

2010 Chevy Corvette Z06 GT1 Debuts at the 2009 New York Auto Show

General Motors used the New York Auto Show to stage the official first showing of its GT1 line of special edition Corvettes. The car wasn’t competing for the spotlight, however, as GM generally ignored the car and instead decided to focus on its new SUVs - like the GMC Terrain and Yukon Denali Hybrid.

The GT1 edition corvettes are being built to celebrate the tremendous success Corvette has had in racing over the past decade. The GT1 Championship Edition Corvette comes with racing inspired graphics, including driver flags and the series championships. On display in New York was a black version, but the the car is alos available in Velocity Yellow. Unfortunately the car comes with so not-so-race-inspired chrome wheels.

Inside the interior is swathed in ebony leather with yellow stitching and features GT1 embroidery on the seats, instrument panel and center console armrest..

Under the hood, the engine cover has a special carbon look with yellow Corvette lettering.

2010 Chevy Volt partially Paid by near $3 Million Government Loan

DETROIT--Although General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson has said that every GM model must "pay the rent," there will be at least one prominent exception: the Chevrolet Volt.

Last week GM disclosed that it had requested $2.6 billion in government loans to finance advanced technology, including tooling and development costs for the Volt and two Volt variants.

The Volt, touted as an important image-changer for General Motors, is scheduled to arrive late in 2010. Company executives previously had acknowledged that the first generation of this plug-in hybrid-powered car would not be profitable.

"We can't make money on the first Volts," said Troy Clarke, president of GM's North American operations. "But as we get a chance to change the generations of technology, we'll lose less and less."

New Chevy Camaro: The Best of the Modern Muscle Car Trio

Chevrolet’s Camaro is poised for success because it’s both a stunning recollection of the ’69 Camaro and because it’s a fantastic car for driving enthusiasts. GM cut no corners in producing the Camaro, making it the most successful of the neo-classic pony cars so far.

For the Camaro, GM made no compromises. The car enjoys the benefit of top-flight suspension, brake and steering hardware that is derived from the Holden Monaro, a traditional rear-drive car built by GM’s Australian subsidiary. But unlike the Challenger, the Camaro’s engineers were able to push and pull on the chassis dimensions as needed to retain the concept car’s classic lines....Continued

2010 Chevy Camaro SS vs 2009 Dodge Challenger RT vs 2010 Ford Mustang GT

Thirty-five years ago, the word "Watergate" was being re-Webstered from meaning "a snazzy apartment building in Washington, D.C." to "a coverup investigation involving the White House, two reporters who don't look anything like Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, and a guy named 'Deep Throat.'" The most popular show on TV was about a grump named Archie whose tattered easy chair would go on to occupy a place in the Smithsonian. Half of the current staff of Motor Trend hadn't even been born yet (yes, Angus, we're getting old). That year, 1974, would also mark the final moment for decades in which America's streets would be prowled by all three current-gen versions of the most iconic-ever ponycars: the Chevy Camaro, the Dodge Challenger, and the Ford Mustang.

Frankly, we thought we'd never see the tire smoke from the ponycar wars again.

Defying the oddsmakers, though, America's three trick ponies are back. And they're back big. Those days of yore are indeed long-gone -- but only because the new incarnations of the Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang are so far evolved from their famed predecessors they're recognizable almost by name only. Sure, the old cars looked cool and made lots of noise and got the girls, and some could even lay down a righteous longitudinal blast when the road arrowed straight. But none could match these current machines for blistering speed, cornering ability, braking power, driveability, reliability, and comfort. I mean, when I was 16, we didn't have fancy computers to make our cars run like winged chariots, and we didn't have in-car iPod adaptors (unless you count the Tijuana Brass on eight-track), and we sure didn't have...never mind. You whippersnappers today don't know how good you've got it.
