The editors of Bloomberg News decided to run their first-ever Car of the Year selections this year and have chosen the 2010 Porsche Panamera as their 2009 Car of the Year... This is Bloomberg’s first-ever Car of the Year selections, with seven categories in all, including Car of the Year, Green Car, Economy, Family, All-Around SUV, Sports Car and Executive Sedan. All eligible contenders were evaluated by Bloomberg’s weekly auto columnist, Jason H. Harper, who drives and tests hundreds of luxury, sports and alternative-fuel autos each year. The selectees were evaluated in terms of overall performance, intelligent design and smart style, desirability and build quality. Porsche’s first four-door car and the company’s fourth model line went on sale in October, joining the company’s successful stable of performance thoroughbreds: the mid-engine Boxster and Cayman, the Cayenne SUV and the iconic 911 Carrera. The Bloomberg recognition comes on the heals of the Panamera receiving an Edmunds Inside Line Editors’ Most Wanted 2010 trophy at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show (article link: http://www.insideline.com/features/2010-edmunds-inside-line-editors-most-wanted-awards.html) All Three Panamera Models Deliver High Performance and Low Fuel Consumption Initially offered in three versions – the 400-horsepower, two-wheel drive Panamera S and all-wheel drive Panamera 4S, and the 500-horsepower, twin-turbocharged, all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo – the new Panamera provides Porsche performance and quality, as well as a level of comfort absent among true high-performance cars. The Panamera is the first premium car to feature an automatic engine start/stop system used in conjunction with seven-speed double-clutch transmission. This system saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a stop light. All engines have advanced and fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), as well. Porsche engineers also focused on weight savings and lightweight technologies to further enhance fuel efficiency. As a result, the Panamera S and Panamera 4S deliver 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway (19 mpg combined), while the Panamera Turbo achieves 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway (18 mpg combined). Amazingly, these figures were achieved without activating the standard auto start/stop system. All Panamera models are not subject to the gas guzzler tax and provide the best fuel economy in their competitive set. Anyone remember the Vanguard-Sebring CitiCar? This tiny, angular, two-seat battery electric car built in Florida from 1974-1977 looks as if it could have been the spiritual predecessor of the Smart (highly doubtful), and now Smart is poised to bring an electric version of its familiar Fortwo commuter car to our shores. Series production began in mid-November on the regular production line in Hambach France. This variant, unlike the 100 experimental first-gen e-Smarts, uses a 16.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that replaces the fuel tank below the seats and between the axles, out of harm's way and as low as possible. The rear-mounted 30 kW motor (40 hp) provides 89 lb-ft of torque. That's up by a third from the first-gen motor, which drew from a sodium-nickel-chloride battery that required heating to work. Lessons learned in the earlier electric Smart have driven development of this car, 1000 of which will be produced for lease during the second quarter of 2010 in selected European and U.S. cities prior to wider production beginning in 2012.

It's only been five years since the Tucson first went on sale, but a lot has happened since then. The crossover segment has exploded, now with dozens of vehicles to choose from, while the traditional SUV segment is on the wane. The Tucson went on sale in the middle of this transition, as a crossover with boxy traditional SUV-like styling. It remained basically unchanged as competitors underwent major redesigns, such as the Toyota RAV4 (in 2006), Honda CR-V (2007), Ford Escape (2008), and Subaru Forester (2009), and the new Nissan Rogue came on the scene (2008). Now, the Tucson has shed its conservative exterior and comes to market with a sportier, more carlike attitude. There's no mistaking the 2010 for the previous Tucson, as the styling has now gone far more curvaceous, as part of what Hyundai refers to as "fluidic sculpture design." Its angles and side profile are reminiscent of the Nissan Murano and Rogue, as well as the Subaru Tribeca, which is about as far as you can get from the first-gen. It comes on 17-inch wheels with 18s optional. The GLS and Limited we drove were shod with Kumho Solus KL21s, 225/60R17 (GLS) and 225/55R18 (Limited), both of which are mud and snow rated.>Continue>
