Last week, General Motors issued a recall for 2009-10 Chevrolet Impalas.

According to GM's NHTSA filing, the problem lies with the front seatbelt anchorages. Some of the seatbelts may not be properly secured to the lapbelt pretensioner. This could lead to the seatbelts not restraining occupants as intended in the event of an accident, which could lead to greater injury.

Approximately 303,000 may have been affected. GM has authorized its dealerships to assess the seatbelt anchors and make the necessary adjustments or replace the anchors entirely.

The recall will begin by October 26, 2010.

At 2010 Auto China motorshow in Beijing, General Motors revealed a crossover version of their yet to be launched Chevrolet Volt...

Press Release:

GM Unveils Chevrolet Volt MPV5 Electric Concept at Auto China 2010

Crossover with Extended Range Capability Builds on Volt’s Foundation

Beijing – Chevrolet has made a major commitment to providing world-class, fuel-efficient vehicles to its customers around the world. In recent months, through GM’s Shanghai GM joint venture, Chevrolet has introduced the fuel-efficient Cruze and New Sail in China. It will introduce the Volt electric vehicle with extended range capability in 2011.

In preparation for the Volt’s arrival, Chevrolet is leveraging Auto China 2010, which starts today in Beijing, to introduce the Volt MPV5 electric concept. The five-passenger multi-purpose crossover concept demonstrates the potential of the Voltec propulsion system by utilizing the same foundation as the Volt, for gas- and tailpipe emissions-free electric driving.

Maximizing Efficiency and Style

The styling of the Volt MPV5 concept borrows design and aerodynamic cues from the Chevrolet Volt. The front fascia is among the most aerodynamic of any crossover thanks to its closed grille and aero-optimized lower air dam, both of which help improve fuel efficiency. A full-underbody belly pan, along with rocker claddings, creased tail lamps and specially designed blades on the rear quarter, also help the Volt MPV5 concept cut through the wind with ease. The intense focus on improved aerodynamics enables greater all-electric range.

The exterior of the Volt MPV5 concept isn’t solely about efficiency. Its Sonic Blue Metallic paint provides a contemporary appeal, while the dual skylight panels and 19-inch Volt-inspired wheels build the Volt MPV5 concept’s sporty credentials.

The Volt MPV5 concept’s dimensions provide added passenger comfort. While the 2,760-mm wheelbase of the Volt MPV5 concept is a mere 15 mm longer than the wheelbase of the Chevrolet Volt, its body is 181 mm longer (4,585 mm), 73 mm wider (1,871 mm) and 182 mm taller (1,612 mm) than the Volt.

Inside, the Volt MPV5 concept adopts the Volt’s center stack and gauge cluster along with its striking two-tone leather seats. Thanks to the Volt MPV5 concept’s size, passenger comfort doesn’t take a backseat. Typical for Chevrolet crossovers, the Volt MPV5 concept’s seating position allows for maximum comfort and flexibility, including improved entry and egress.

When it comes to cargo, the Volt MPV5 concept carries on the crossover tradition thanks to its flip-and-fold second row seating, which provides up to 1,764.1 liters of cargo space with the seats folded and 863.7 liters of space behind the second row.

Voltec Power Boosts Green Credentials

The Volt MPV5 concept utilizes the same Voltec propulsion system found in the Chevrolet Volt, including the added capability of an engine generator to extend the driving range and eliminate “range anxiety.” A 16-kWh T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack powers the electric drive unit.

The flexibility of the Voltec system enables the Volt MPV5 concept to meet full vehicle speed and acceleration requirements while driving the vehicle and its five occupants up to 51.5 km on pure electric propulsion. This is double what the average urban commuter in China travels each day. When the battery is depleted, a 1.4-liter engine generator sustains the battery charge and provides up to 482 km of electric propulsion.

“The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles. from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept,” said Doug Parks, Global Vehicle Line Executive and Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles at GM.

“Rapidly growing demand for personal transportation across China is creating new environmental and energy security challenges,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “GM is committed to finding and adopting solutions, which include the electrification of the automobile. The world premiere of the Volt MPV5 concept in Beijing demonstrates GM’s desire to make China a global focus of its advanced technology strategy.”

GM continues to advance electrification in China through research and development. It has launched the China Automotive Energy Research Center (CAERC) in Beijing. The venture with SAIC and Tsinghua University is developing a comprehensive automotive energy strategy for China. The GM China Science Lab, which opened last November, is carrying out advanced automotive-related research, including battery development. In March, GM introduced the EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concepts in Shanghai. A centerpiece of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, EN-V embodies GM’s vision for personal urban mobility in 2030. In addition, GM is supporting its Shanghai GM joint venture’s “Drive to Green” strategy, which is focused on developing green products, supporting green manufacturing and undertaking a green responsibility.

Automobile Magazine had a chance to check out several pre-productions models of the Chevrolet Cruz, the brand’s compact entry against segment leaders Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and even the current Ford Focus*.

The folks at Automobile Magazine found the compact, well, not so compact, especially the interior which felt more being in a mid-sized sedan than a small vehicle. However, the Cruz handled like a compact, matching the Civic in dampening road bumps and other obstacles...

Motor Trend Corvette ZR1 Vs Blue Angels F/A-18 Fighter Jet!

Motor Trend has put a top-notch 'Vette up against a military jet twice before. Long before Top Gear thought of it, they got their hands on one of 14 500-hp twin-turbocharged Corvettes built by Chevrolet and capable of 200 mph, and pitted it against a Northrop T-38 Talon. That was 1986. Twenty years later, they sent a 800-hp Lingenfelter Corvette after the Blue Angels and their F/A-18 Hornets. Now, it's time for a rematch.

Chevrolet Recall - 2009 Chevy Traverse SUVs have a Defective Parking Brake

General Motors is recalling about 15,000 2009 Chevrolet Traverse SUVS in order to correct a parking brake defect that could lead to what the automaker calls "unintended vehicle movement."

In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM explains, "These vehicles may have a park brake cable link (connector) that is not to specification. The connector may fracture when the park brake cable is depressed." According to GM's filing, "If the transmission shift lever is in the park position, there will be no unintended vehicle movement. However, if the keys are left in the ignition, the transmission shift lever is in any position other than park, and the vehicle is parked on a sufficient slop, it could result in unintended vehicle movement," which "could result in a crash without prior warning."

Chevrolet dealers will replace the connector at no charge to owners. Dealers will begin contacting owners in June, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

It's Official! General Motors issues Chevy Camaro Recall due to Battery Cable

You may remember last week's post about a Camaro5 forum member's new Camaro SS shutting down with just 40 miles on the odometer. Her local Chevrolet dealer explained the problem was caused by a faulty battery cable rubbing against the car's starter. Apparently, this was not an isolated incident.

Today, Chevrolet is officially issuing a recall for the problem.

Custom ZR1 Corvette by Bertone - Mantide Shares Mechanicals, Not Body of Vette

Times are tough for custom coach builders and designers. The German coach builder Karmann and Pininfarina, the legendary Italian design firm, have both recently reorganized.

To show that it is still flourishing and ready for work, Stile Bertone is showing off a new concept by its design director, Jason Castriota, who is known for his work on the Ferrari P4/5 while he was at Pininfarina. Built on the chassis and running gear of a Ferrari Enzo, the P4/5 was a one-of-a-kind car, commissioned by James Glickenhaus, an investment manager, film producer and Ferrari collector from Westchester County.

The Bertone Mantide has a more pedestrian platform, though perhaps only slightly. It is built on the mechanicals of a Corvette ZR1, but Mr. Castriota’s car shows no similarity to the Detroit body. It’s a sophisticated design that takes a lot of visual sorting out.

2010 Chevy Equinox Crossover SUV priced less than Outgoing Model

DETROIT - Chevrolet announced the 2010 Equinox crossover will carry a MSRP of $23,185, including a $745 destination charge, for the FWD LS model. It goes on sale this June.

"Offering the fuel economy of a sedan with the functionality of a crossover, the Equinox is a superior value for our customers," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.

Chevy expects its Equinox to have best-in-class fuel economy at 30 MPG with its advanced 4-cylinder, direct injected engine. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:

* New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 264 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
* Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
* Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
* Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
* "Advanced" remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail, including standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel, standard driver seat power height adjustment and power lumbar, and a number of storage bins: an oversized glove box, a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

"Getting best-in-class fuel economy and great storage for less than $24,000 is significant," Peper added. "In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox."

While the all-new Equinox carries a smaller price than its predecessor, the list of standard content is larger - including more airbags, power lumbar support, and 17" wheels. Combine this added content with the improvements in fuel economy, driving performance and available features, and the value proposition improves even more with the 2010 Equinox.

Chevy Camaro gets 562 HP courtesy of Hennessey

The 6.2-liter V8 in the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS cranks out 426 hp or 400 hp, depending on the transmission choice.

But there are some people out there who want more.

With a higher-performance Z28 Camaro from the factory on the back shelf as General Motors battles for survival, aftermarket tuners are ready to fill the void.

Among the first out of the gate is Hennessey Performance Engineering of Houston, Texas, with its HPE550 Camaro.

Bolting a Magnuson/Hennessey supercharger and Corsa stainless-steel exhaust system onto GM's LS3 V8 enables Hennessey to crank up the output to 562 hp at 6,200 rpm and 557 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm.

Hennessey says that powertrain will rocket the Camaro from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, compared with runs in the 5.0-second range in the stock Camaro SS with a manual transmission. Hennessey says the reworked Camaro will cover the quarter mile in 11.9 seconds with a top speed of 119 mph.

How much damage does this do you to bank account?

Chevy Orlando Crossover SUV mothballed indefinitely announces UAW

Following a surprise appearance at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, General Motors announced the seven-seat Orlando concept would be making the transition to production model.

However, GM’s financial outlook has worsened since the Detroit show, forcing the Michigan-based automaker to indefinitely suspend the Orlando program.

The Orlando – which shares its Delta platform with the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze and Volt – was slated to begin rolling out GM’s Hamtramck plant just in time for the 2011 model year, but a UAW representative says those plans have been postponed indefinitely.

2009 Chevy Colorado Pickup Truck Review by Automobile Magazine

Finding it tough to curb your craving for V-8 power and prestige?

General Motors knows your pain. To man up the lame Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon for 2009, the General blessed the engine roster with a new 300-hp V-8. The result is a mini muscle truck available in two body styles, each with a sticker price of well below $30,000. Take your pick between an extended cab with rear jump seats accessed via rear-hinged half doors and a six-foot bed, or a real four-door crew cab with a rear bench seat and a five-foot bed.

New Camaro, Challenger, Mustang Comparison/Test - A 35 Year Wait Rewarded!

Thirty-five years ago, the word "Watergate" was being re-Webstered from meaning "a snazzy apartment building in Washington, D.C." to "a coverup investigation involving the White House, two reporters who don't look anything like Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, and a guy named 'Deep Throat.'" The most popular show on TV was about a grump named Archie whose tattered easy chair would go on to occupy a place in the Smithsonian. Half of the current staff of Motor Trend hadn't even been born yet (yes, Angus, we're getting old). That year, 1974, would also mark the final moment for decades in which America's streets would be prowled by all three current-gen versions of the most iconic-ever ponycars: the Chevy Camaro, the Dodge Challenger, and the Ford Mustang.

Frankly, we thought we'd never see the tire smoke from the ponycar wars again.

Defying the oddsmakers, though, America's three trick ponies are back. And they're back big. Those days of yore are indeed long-gone -- but only because the new incarnations of the Camaro, Challenger, and Mustang are so far evolved from their famed predecessors they're recognizable almost by name only. Sure, the old cars looked cool and made lots of noise and got the girls, and some could even lay down a righteous longitudinal blast when the road arrowed straight. But none could match these current machines for blistering speed, cornering ability, braking power, driveability, reliability, and comfort. I mean, when I was 16, we didn't have fancy computers to make our cars run like winged chariots, and we didn't have in-car iPod adaptors (unless you count the Tijuana Brass on eight-track), and we sure didn't have...never mind. You whippersnappers today don't know how good you've got it.

What remains utterly unchanged, however, is a degree of nameplate loyalty and fan mania the likes of which might be matched by the current March Madness B-ball tourney. Or maybe not. After all, Camaro versus Mustang versus Challenger is deeply ingrained into the American psyche, the four-wheeled equivalent of the Hatfields versus the McCoys versus...uh, the HatCoys. Doesn't really matter which car we deem the best or what the numbers say -- the feuding factions will stand behind their favorites like a third-grader defending his mom against the schoolyard rabble. Might even be a few bloody noses thrown in if the hostilities escalate to the level of, "Yeah? Well, your Challenger's so fat..."

Hey, but we love a good debate (or at least starting one). So...we proudly present our exclusive, first-ever, side-by-side-by-side comparison of the new Chevrolet Camaro SS, the Dodge Challenger R/T, and the Ford Mustang GT. All the numbers, all our driving impressions...just one winner.
