Located south of Detroit in Flat Rock, Michigan, the AutoAlliance plant — built from the remains of a former Ford stamping plant — has churned out Mazda products since 1987. Ford entered the project as a joint venture partner in 1992, allowing the plant to build Mazda and Ford models built from a similar platform (i.e. MX-6 and Probe).

Now the fate of its AutoAlliance factory hangs in the balance. Although Ford appears to be content with the Mustang’s sales figures, the 6’s slow sales rate has Mazda reconsidering their participation in what is panning out to be an unprofitable venture. In 2010, AAI not only cut 900 workers and a single production shift, but only cranked out 77,586 Mustangs and 45,000 Mazda6 sedans. Mazda CFO Kiyoshi Ozaki says in order to reach a profit, the plant needs to run at 70 percent of its capacity, and last year’s volume is roughly 40,000 vehicles shy of that goal.

Filling that gap with the 6, which faces increased competition in the U.S. midsize sedan segment, is certainly no easy task. As a result, Ozarki says the automaker is considering pulling out of the plant altogether, or perhaps retooling it for a different, more popular model (the 3 could be a good option). Although withdrawing from the venture is a possibility, it is widely seen as a last-ditch option, considering the rising strength of the Japanese yen. Since most Mazda models apart from the 6 and Tribute are built in Japan, the automaker is forced to import the majority of vehicles sold in North America. Subsequently, it attributed a $163 million loss over the last nine months to the exchange rate.

Should Mazda stop building its own products in Michigan, the company could investigate other means of producing vehicles in North America. Mazda hopes to increase domestic production by 33 percent by 2016, and according to Automotive News, is also investigating the option of opening an assembly plant in Mexico.

A.com - "We’ve been loving the Mazda Koda-based and Rapide-lookin’ Shinari concept sedan since we first saw it.

Now the automaker wants you to meet the Minagi (pronounced like Mr. Miyagi), the first Mazda to feature both the new Koda corporate design language and their new Sky Active technologies."

With a little hint of Kia Sportage and a hint of Infiniti in the grille, the all-new Minagi is crisp, sharp, and athletic looking. We must say this is one huge step forward for Mazda. Other exciting features include Sky Active technologies, which claim to make the engine more efficient and powerful.

Expect the production version to turn up at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show with a CX-5 badge.

A.com - "The autosphere is abuzzed with news that the next-gen Ford Mustang will get some style luvin' from the rest of the world.

According to Automotive News, While development work is being reportedly assigned to Ford’s American engineering staff, the Mustang’s styling will be an international joint venture — a vast departure from tradition, as the company’s U.S.-based designers have typically been responsible for the pony car."

Ford's VP of global product development, Derrick Kuzak, says that global design input is a common process for all vehicles. When a new car is made it receives various inputs from its other markets around the world--which is especially important when multiple models are sold in various countries across the world.

Be on the lookout for an all-new Mustang design coming soon in 2014-2015.

AMAG - "I’m worried about the Ford Flex.

I’ve been a fan of this car ever since it first appeared in concept form, as the Fairlane, at the 2005 Detroit auto show."

Everyone loves the Ford Flex for its stretchy and spacious design. However, sales numbers show that the new Honda Pilot and the Chevrolet Traverse outsell the Flex by almost 3-to-1.

In-house competition is also an issue--like the all-new "cheaper" 2011 Ford Explorer. Ford continues to add features such as the an optional Ecoboost V6 engine, but even that's pricey. So Ford's new idea is the 2011 Flex Titanium edition that comes with a blacked-out trim and roof, aiming at the same hip crowd as before. Titanium editions are more expensive than the Limited, and with all the extra options it can run as much as $50,000.

All-in-all the Titanium probably won't be saving the Flex, but it still remains our choice over the Explorer.

AMAG - "We got our first peek at Aston Martin’s new V8 Vantage S earlier this year, but it wasn’t until now that we had a good earful of the car being driven in anger.

The British automaker is no stranger to crafting catchy promotional videos for its cars, including the race-inspired V8 Vantage N420."

The 2011 Aston Martin V8 Vantage S definitely outperforms the N420.

It still uses a 4.7L, V8 engine, but engineers were able to tweak it for another 10 hp (which isn't much), which adds up to 430 hp total. Vantage S models also get 15 inch brake rotors with 6-piston front calipers, a stiffer suspension, 19-inch wheels, and a facelift.

The Vantage S is by far one of the best V8 powered Astons to take the road, besides the Vantage GT4 racer. You can hear the V8 engine roaring over some rifling drum and bass music in the companies all-new short produced video clip.

Back in 1997, GM introduced the Cadillac Catera, a mid-sized, rear-wheel-drive offering that was essentially a rebadged Opel Omega.

This being GM’s utterly clueless Ron Zarella era, the company marketed the car—whose best characteristic was its competent, European handling (it was a European car, after all)—with the tagline: “The Caddy That Zigs.” A cartoon duck also featured prominently in the advertising. Not surprisingly, this high-concept campaign did little to boost sales of the otherwise deeply mediocre Catera, and the car stumbled along in the marketplace until 2001, when it was, mercifully, replaced by the CTS. Now in its second generation, the CTS is really feeling its mojo. The past year has seen the Cadillac flesh out the lineup with the surprising CTS wagon (surprising by its very existence, given how much our market seems to hate wagons) and the dramatic CTS coupe. Both new body styles now also can be had in V-series trim, with a 556-hp supercharged V-8 and the attendant mechanical and appearance upgrades. While the CTS-V wagon earns kudos for its rare and unlikely combo of searing performance and (modest) utility, the CTS-V coupe puts its muscle-car cajones in an absolutely standout shape...
