Back in 1997, GM introduced the Cadillac Catera, a mid-sized, rear-wheel-drive offering that was essentially a rebadged Opel Omega.

This being GM’s utterly clueless Ron Zarella era, the company marketed the car—whose best characteristic was its competent, European handling (it was a European car, after all)—with the tagline: “The Caddy That Zigs.” A cartoon duck also featured prominently in the advertising. Not surprisingly, this high-concept campaign did little to boost sales of the otherwise deeply mediocre Catera, and the car stumbled along in the marketplace until 2001, when it was, mercifully, replaced by the CTS. Now in its second generation, the CTS is really feeling its mojo. The past year has seen the Cadillac flesh out the lineup with the surprising CTS wagon (surprising by its very existence, given how much our market seems to hate wagons) and the dramatic CTS coupe. Both new body styles now also can be had in V-series trim, with a 556-hp supercharged V-8 and the attendant mechanical and appearance upgrades. While the CTS-V wagon earns kudos for its rare and unlikely combo of searing performance and (modest) utility, the CTS-V coupe puts its muscle-car cajones in an absolutely standout shape...

Cadillac has very much graduated from making old, boring slushmobiles into competent and viable alternatives to the top European and Japanese sellers.

And to further emphasize this trend, Cadillac revealed the CTS-V Coupe SCCA Race Car today at the Detroit Auto Show...

It seems like having a murdered-out special edition is all the rage these days.

Fresh on the heels of the release of two Black Edition models from Porsche, the General is serving up a Black Diamond Edition of its own for all flavors of the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V...

Press Release: Cadillac launches CTS-V Black Diamond Edition

Exclusive paint process enhances richness of CTS-V surface

  • First use of JDSU's proprietary SpectraFlair® pigment in North America
  • Satin Graphite wheels, yellow Brembo brake calipers add style, performance
  • Recaro seating, Midnight Sapele wood complete interior

DETROIT – Cadillac will offer this spring a Black Diamond Edition of the high-performance CTS-V that comes with a host of popular performance options and an exclusive tri-coat paint, also called "Black Diamond."

The Black Diamond Edition, available in the CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon models, will be the first use by an automaker of JDSU's proprietary SpectraFlair pigment in North America. JDSU, a Milipitas, Calif.,-based optical technology firm, specializes in cutting-edge color solutions for a wide range of markets. Its pigments are used in certain DuPont paints supplied to Cadillac.

In the CTS-V Black Diamond, a dark tri-coat paint is embedded with SpectraFlair Bright Silver pigment. While other luxury makers offer metallic paints, Black Diamond is created through a meticulous process that gives the paint added dimension.

Instead of simply containing small bits of metal, the SpectraFlair pigment in Black Diamond uses aluminum flakes encapsulated in a glass-like substance called magnesium fluoride. The result is a paint that has a diamond-like sparkle as light hits the surface from different angles.

"The CTS-V Black Diamond Edition is like a finely crafted, tailored tuxedo," said Michelle Killen, Cadillac exterior paint designer. "The base color may be a simple black, but the details and richness of the material set it apart."

Black Diamond helps Cadillac meet growing demand by luxury buyers for paints that are set apart not just by their color but also by their special effects.

"Auto makers and consumers are looking to differentiate the color black, an ubiquitous color in automotive," said John Book, Custom Color Solutions product manager at JDSU. "Black Diamond offers the discerning Cadillac customer a special option color that stands out and remains true to their sense of luxury and style."

In addition to the unique paint, CTS-V Black Diamond comes standard with content that complements its look and feel. The special edition has:

Satin Graphite 19-inch wheels with yellow Brembo brake calipers. These six-piston front, four-piston back brake calipers provide exceptional stopping capabilities.

Recaro seats that feature 14 adjustable elements, French-stitched leather and microfiber suede inserts in the center sections of the cushions and seatbacks.

Midnight Sapele wood trim known for its durability and distinctive grain.

"We've already established V-Series as a serious sub-brand for Cadillac," said Rich Pinto, Cadillac creative designer. "Black Diamond further establishes V-Series in the market as a performance-minded line of vehicles with a luxury twist."

The CTS-V Black Diamond comes with a suggested retail price, including destination charges, of $69,190 for the manual or $70,490 for the automatic, a $4,850 premium over the CTS-V base price. The CTS-V Black Diamond will be available at U.S. dealerships in March.

The CTS-V Black Diamond Edition joins Cadillac's award-winning V-Series line of performance luxury vehicles. The CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon all feature a supercharged 6.2L V8 engine with 556-horspower, Magnetic Ride Control suspension that reads and reacts to the road 1,000 times a second and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tire.

2010 Cadillac SRX Turbo Review

The luxury crossover might end up becoming a symbol of the 'you-can-have-it-all' era recently brought to a stunning conclusion by the collapse of Lehman Brothers. They're vehicles that let you tower over most passenger cars on the road while giving you near-carlike ride and handling. They get fuel mileage that won't embarrass you, but won't give you anything to brag about, either. And their performance is good enough, at least, to rival many quotidian cars.

Cadillac is just now jumping into this rich pool filled with the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Volvo XC60 and of course, the latest edition of bland perfection, the Lexus RX...Continued

2010 Cadillac SRX, CTS Sports Wagon prep for Summer Debut

DETROIT – Cadillac’s model lineup expands with two dramatically-designed new luxury vehicles that also bring new dimensions of versatility and efficiency to the marketplace. Cadillac announced today that the 2010 SRX Crossover, scheduled to begin production this summer, will be priced aggressively starting at $34,155.

Later this summer, the acclaimed CTS family will expand again with the arrival of the CTS Sport Wagon. Together with the all-new SRX, these two dynamic new Cadillac models are in sync with the changing priorities of today’s luxury consumers.

“In a tough market the new SRX and CTS Sport Wagon are the right products at the right time, says Steve Shannon,” executive director of marketing for Cadillac. “They offer new dimensions of versatility and fuel efficiency, along with Cadillac’s signature design and technical features.”

The all-new SRX launches into the strong luxury crossover vehicle segment, a category that now accounts for nearly one-fourth of all luxury vehicles sold in the U.S. market. The SRX features new downsized and fuel efficient engines in a completely redesigned vehicle that delivers a dynamic alternative in terms of visual appeal and driving character.

“We believe the Cadillac SRX offers emotional appeal to a segment previously devoid of much of that,” says Shannon. “At the same time, it also has very practical new features such as advanced All-Wheel-Drive, and an efficient standard 3.0-liter Direct Injection V6 engine. And with an entry price of $34,155 the new SRX presents an attractive offer to consumers, while taking on the traditional segment leader aggressively.”

The new CTS Sport Wagon offers the same design and technical features of Cadillac’s centerpiece model, the CTS sport sedan – but in a wagon body style that effectively doubles the car’s cargo space. The new Sport Wagon includes the same 3.0-liter Direct Injection engine that serves as the standard engine in the new SRX. In the Sport Wagon, highway fuel economy is estimated to reach 28 mpg.

Both the new SRX and CTS Sport Wagon will be presented in a special video webcast from one of Cadillac’s design studios. Visit www.cadillacstudiolive.com for an inside look at the highlights of both new models.

2010 Cadillac SRX Hybrid to join Cadillac Escalade Hybrid this Summer

GMs 2-mode hybrid drivetrains are currently in use in large trucks. They can be found in the Escalade, Yukon, Tahoe, and Silverado where they allow these massive vehicles to achieve 20 mpg combined fuel economy.

Currently a 2-Mode hybrid VUE is in pre-production, and launch has been delayed. Many factors have gone into this delay first and foremost being GM’s financial position and possibly the dead end road Saturn is on.

The 2010 Cadillac SRX, initially previewed a s a fuel cell Voltec derivative Provoq concept, is set for launch this summer. There will be two drivetrain options, a 3.0-liter Direct Injection and a 2.8-liter turbo.

2010 Cadillac SRX - First Look at the Newly Redesigned Luxury Crossover

If you could pick one vehicle to serve as a metaphor for what General Motors is trying to do to make itself leaner, meaner and better positioned to fight off foreign competitors, it's the 2010 Cadillac SRX.

That confused wagon as you knew it is gone. In its place is a pure crossover. It's smaller, a bit more distinctive and fitted with a new engine lineup topped by what's thought to be Cadillac's first-ever turbo in North America. But most critical for GM's storied luxury brand, and the company as a whole, is that the SRX is a realistic competitor for segment-leader Lexus.

From the sleek sheetmetal with edgy lines, the in-your-face grille and the eye-catching headlights, this Cadillac is poised to stand out in a conformist sort of way. Most luxo-crossovers don't have this kind of panache, but the SRX is meant to fit in better. The 2009 model was a tweener, looking sort of carlike but with three rows and a boatlike stance; it grazed big-crossover territory.

The mission of the new model is simpler: appeal to a mainstream audience of wealthy consumers who value image and some practical function.

"In this marketplace, you want to put the chips down on more of a winning hand," said Steve Shannon, executive director, product and marketing, for GM's premium brands.

Cadillac already offers both hybrid and Platinum variants of the Escalade, but this latest offering combines the 'green' powertrain of the former with the amenities of the latter. Future Station Wagons to be the New SUV - No More Faux Wood Trim Here

Recent announcements from General Motors and Chrysler about their plans to drop several models and brands didn't seem to hinder Cadillac's resolution to press forward with the launch of its first-ever station wagon.

The Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, due out in May, is essentially the brand's successful CTS sedan, but with additional cargo space. Cadillac reps say they're catering to luxury-minded buyers who want to downsize while maintaining practicality.

"We think the newness of it and the sort of times in which we're living, it seems like the right car at the right time and the right size," says David Caldwell, a spokesman for Cadillac.

Production version of Cadillac Converj Concept stalled until GM sees Money

The latest Voltec plug-in hybrid powertrain is the exact same unit from the forthcoming Volt which will be launched in the later part of next year.

Moreover, GM will construct a factory in Michigan soon along with LG Chem to develop more advanced lithium-ion batteries needed to power the hybrid system. In spite of the presence of everything it needs, scarcity of funds and more important vehicles in the pipeline have unfortunately gotten rid of all the chances of the Cadillac Converj Concept to reach production in the near future.
